Montego Bayby!

Image
If it was a day all of us really looked forward to, it was this specific day! We woke up around 7:30 am and could not wait to take the bus to Montego Bay, and some days later to Dunn’s River Falls. The first thing Anette shouted when she saw the citysign was "Montego Bayby!". Clearly she was very exited for this part of the trip. Although it is a 3h and 15 mins ride from Kingston to Montego Bay at the coast, we had fun and took some naps on the bus. Since we drove through the country, we got to see a lot. After some days in Montego Bay, we went to Dunn’s River Falls, and it is a almost 2 hour ride from Montego Bay. The ride went by real quick, and we were really looking forward to experiencing the beach (Dunn’s River beach) featured in James Bond film “Dr. No”! (Dunn’s River Falls, 2011). We, as Ian Flemming, have fallen in love with Jamaica after this trip, even though we once got kicked out of a restaurant ;-) which he probably did not ha ha . (Dunn’s River Falls, 2...

I was the one looking the most forward to our trip to the Bob Marley Museum, located in central Kingston. We took the bus to the museum at 10:30 am so we could spend as much time there as possible. The entrance was in multiple colours, which reminded us a lot about Bob Marley´s style. We paid $40 each and went in to experience the world of Bob Marley. It was packed with people, and the museum was loaded with lots of colors, murals and pictures of him and his family which, in my opinion, really captured the spirit of his music and beliefs. We took a guided tour through the former home of the legendary reggae musician. Marley's room was preserved as he left it, with his guitar on the side of his bed. Among his personal items, his favorites were a denim shirt and his Rastafarian clothes. The tour guide gave us a lot of information about Marley, such as this: he was the one who made the music genre reggae, dreadlocks and Jamaica generally, world famous. His songs promot...

Look at the parade!

We're back with an update again, this time telling about our experience as celebrating like Yardies! Jamaica’s national day is 6th of August, because that is the date they got independence from Great Britain in 1962 (a global world, 2017). We had the best day ever celebrating the day with the Yardies, and we wore dresses in the colours of the Jamaican Flag, just as the Yardies. We were dancing around in the streets, watching the parades and enjoying the reggae music jamming through the streets! Solveig and May Renate got a bit exhausted of the heat, and went to a cute little cafĂ©, whilst Anette and I kept the Yardie party going! We thought that Independence Day was the biggest event of the year in Jamaica, as it is marked as a national holiday and we put a lot of effort into celebrating our Constitution Day, but the Yardies put more effort into celebrating national her o’s day in October! A little bummer for us, but hey - we had great fun today! Jamaica was a Bri...

Food is love, food is life!

The Yardie Gyals have finally arrived Jamaica! We are staying in Kingston until next Wednesday. Being here, eating, sunbathing and being a tourist has, so far, been amazing. Since I am very interested in different types of food, we needed to try some typical Jamaican cuisine. Our favorite became the traditional “ ackee and saltfish”, which is basically greens and fish. The first time we tasted this dish was at Hot Pot in Kingston, and we got to learn that ackee and saltfish is a classic breakfast combo. We thought it would be a little weird to have this kind of food for breakfast, but of course we had to try it to get the full Jamaican experience. The course consists of salt cod, ackee, onion, pepper, tomato, Scotch Bonnet peppers along with several spices, often topped with bacon. You may wonder what ackee is? We had never heard of it until we came to Jamaica. It turns out it is a Caribbean fruit which is named after a Ghanaian tribe. Some parts of the fruit are actually t...

Details of our trip

We thought that some of you may want to go to Jamaica, especially after following our journey and getting to see all the fun stuff we did over there. When we decided on what we wanted to see while in Jamaica, nothing was going to stop us. Some of the destinations and attractions are far away from each other, so we had to choose the ones we wanted to visit the most. We narrowed it down to Dunn's River Falls because of their rafting and beautiful water falls, the Bob Marley museum and Montego Bay. We decided to mainly stay in Kingston, so we would get the chance to experience the Jamaican city life and participate to their celebration of the Independence day 6. August. After a while, we are heading to the other side of the island to Montego Bay. We have planned some of the days, however, we have decided to just go with the flow! We have several things we want to do, and will use them as guidelines. Travelling around Jamaica is quite easy with the bus, therefore we are open...

TAKEOFF!

Image
Hi! We are the four Norwegian Yardie Gyals; Anette, May Renate, Solveig and Hedda. This year we have decided to go to Jamaica because we have always wanted to travel the world together. Our first destination is Jamaica, so let's go! The four of us sat down and studied Jamaica, and we found out fantastic things about the country. It is located in the middle of America, and is a Caribbean island. The country is not very large, but is still a famous destination. The capital is Kingston, the official language is English, but because Jamaica is a bilingual country, they also talk the local language Patois. The country is a Commonwealth realm, which means that the British Queen is the head of state, but only traditionally. Because og this, the country is a monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as their monarch, and she has been the head of state since 1962, the year Jamaica became independent. In Jamaica, there are religi...
