Food is love, food is life!

The Yardie Gyals have finally arrived Jamaica! We are staying in Kingston until next Wednesday. Being here, eating, sunbathing and being a tourist has, so far, been amazing.
Since I am very interested in different types of food, we needed to try some typical Jamaican cuisine. Our favorite became the traditional “ackee and saltfish”, which is basically greens and fish. The first time we tasted this dish was at Hot Pot in Kingston, and we got to learn that ackee and saltfish is a classic breakfast combo. We thought it would be a little weird to have this kind of food for breakfast, but of course we had to try it to get the full Jamaican experience.

The course consists of salt cod, ackee, onion, pepper, tomato, Scotch Bonnet peppers along with several spices, often topped with bacon. You may wonder what ackee is? We had never heard of it until we came to Jamaica. It turns out it is a Caribbean fruit which is named after a Ghanaian tribe. Some parts of the fruit are actually toxic, which leads to some restrictions when shipping it to some countries.
That may be one of the reasons we had never heard of it before.

It sounds weird to eat salt cod with fruit, however, the ackee actually tasted like cheese or scrambled eggs. Even though we were a bit sceptical to eat ackee and saltfish for breakfast, we really did enjoy the dish and it is safe to say we ate it more than once.

More specifically, Anette, May Renate and I liked it, while Hedda on the other hand could not stand the texture of ackee and saltfish. She therefore decided to give it to Anette, and threw it in her face, making a food fight which led to us being kicked out of the restaurant. Say no more about this event, it was quite embarrassing …
